How to use a golf club? How do you hold it?
Using a golf club is a pretty simple thing, most people know how to do it. That being said doing it well is very difficult, which is why there are so many people who struggle with golf. There are a lot of products out there to help people to improve their swing and we are not going to pretend that you will become a great golfer by reading one article. However the advice here will give you the basics on how to hold and swing a golf club.
In order to learn how to use a golf club you need to know how to hold it properly. Assuming that you are right handed you will want to hold the club with your left hand right at the top of the grip with your left hand right below it. Obviously things will be reversed if you are left handed. Most golfers will have the thumb of their left hand extended down the shaft so that it rests inside of their right hand. This is done to give you more control over the club when you are swinging it.
When you look at pictures of people holding a golf club you should get a pretty good idea of the kind of grip that you should use. However one thing to keep in mind is that when you are holding the club you want to hold it with your fingers and not in the palm of your hand. Again this is to give you more control when you are swinging the club. Control of the club is the most critical thing so you need to make sure that your grip allows this.
When you do swing the club you are doing it mainly using your left hand. Really you should think about it like you are trying to swing with just one arm. Don't actually do this of course or the club may come flying out of your hand. The key point is that the right hand is really just there to provide support. You want to try to keep your left arm straight when you are swinging the club since this will help you to keep your hands back and allow you to get the best contact with the ball.
The rest of your swing is largely about your weight transfer and turning your hips. Remember you hit a golf ball with your whole body not just with your arms. This is something that it takes a great deal of practice to learn and it is not something that you are going to pick up by reading about it. Your best bet is to take lessons to teach you how to swing the club properly. Failing that you may want to try to using videos as a way to learn. Once you have the basics down the rest is really just a matter of practice.
