Golf and Golfclubs

How is a classic golf club constructed? What does it look like?

The modern golf club is a very sophisticated piece of technology. It may not look that way since the actual design of the club is fairly simple. The basics however really do mislead you about what goes into designing a golf club.

Golf clubs are basically just a shaft with a head on the end that is used to hit the ball. The shaft itself is usually made out of steel although modern clubs can be made out of a variety of different materials. The goal of the golf club maker is to build a club that will be as stiff as possible while still being light in weight; this will get the most distance when you hit the ball. This is the reason that clubs are starting to appear that have titanium shafts. Most golf clubs also have a leather grip that cover the top third of the shaft to make it easier to hold onto.

While the shafts on all golf clubs are similar where the real differences start to appears is in the heads. There are two different types of golf clubs, woods and irons. The woods are designed for hitting the ball along way and as a result have quite large heads. The face of the club if flat but the rest of the head is mostly rounded. This is to provide weight to increase the speed at which the club head is moving when it hits the ball. Woods are rarely actually made out of wood these days with most of them being made of steel.

Irons are the other type of golf club and they have heads that look like wedges. These are designed to loft the ball into the air so that the player can get the ball where they want it to fall. The head in this case is still fairly heavy but it is much smaller than it is for a wood. Few irons actually use iron heads anymore, like woods they are usually made of steel.

When you look at a golfers clubs you will notice that they have more than two clubs in their bag. This is because they actually carry a number of different irons and usually a couple of woods as well. The difference between the clubs is their loft; this is determined by the angle of the head and the angle at which it strikes the ball. In general the higher the number of the club the steeper the angle will be and the higher it will loft the ball. Since the job of the irons is to loft the ball a golfer will need several of these to allow them to get the desired loft. This is less of an issue with woods since the goal here is distance but most golfers will carry a couple of woods in case they need to hit a shorter distance.
