What is Golf?

Golf is one of the most popular games in the world, it is also one of the few that has a large following in almost every country. The game attracts huge numbers of players because it can be played by people of all ages and skill levels without too much difficulty.

It is probably safe to assume that you familiar with the game of golf, there are millions of people around the world who are obsessed with it. The object of the game is to put a ball into a hole by hitting it with a club in as few strokes as possible. Although this sounds very simple it is in fact a very challenging game one that people spend years trying to master. This is largely down to the distances that the ball has to travel in order to go into the hole.

One of the unique features of golf is that course that it is played on. It is one of the few stick and ball games that does not use a standardized playing area. Golf courses normally have nine or eighteen holes but other than that courses vary hugely. They can have different lengths, shapes and hazards that you have hit the ball around. Even on the same course you will find that there is a huge difference from hole to hole. This is one of the things that makes golf so challenging and which attracts a lot of players, the challenge of having to deal with different holes all the time.

In order to hit the ball you need to have a golf club, actually you will need to have several golf clubs. There are a variety of different clubs that you may want to use depending on how far you have to hit the ball and how it lies on the course. You are allowed to carry a maximum of fourteen different clubs with you when you play a round of golf but most carry fewer than that. Generally nine clubs is considered to be sufficient for the average golfer. Most players take the clubs that they use very seriously and invest in a great deal of money in them.

Golf is a game that has a lot of rules so you need to really make an effort to learn them. The basic rules are pretty simple, however you will encounter a lot of odd situations during a round of golf as balls end up in areas where they can't be played or they get lost. When this happens there is a very complicated set of rules to determine what you are supposed to do. Even more important than the official rules of golf are the rules of golf etiquette. These are rules that are designed to ensure that other players on the course are able to enjoy their game, they must always be followed.
